Covered Button Directions

This design fits a size #45 Dritz Brand covered button form. Its finished size if 1 .

Choose a sturdy, but not thick, fabric. The finer (tighter) the weave, the better your embroidery
will turn out. Use your smallest possible hoop and stabilize the fabric with sew-in interfacing
instead of tear-a-way. If you must use tear-a-way, remove as much as possible before covering
the buttons. After embroidering the design, stitch the last color (the basting circle surrounding the
design) in a color that matches your fabric. Following the basting circle, cut the button cover out
about 1/8 away from this stitching line.

Thread a small needle with a doubled thread and hand baste using tiny stitches all around the
inside of the basting circle, about 1/8 to the inside. Place your metal button cap on the wrong
side of the fabric button cover and pull up the basting stitches firmly, enclosing the cap. Check to
be sure the design is centered, tie off the basting thread and apply the cap back as per the
directions on the back of the button cover package.

This button can be turned into a lovely brooch by adding beading, sequins or other trimmings. If
you wish, you can clip the button shank off with wire snips and glue a bar pin to the back.
